31-Year-Old SNES RPG Returns on PS5 & Switch 2 With $199 Release January 2027

Terranigma released 31 years ago on the Super Nintendo, and is about to make a comeback with a special edition that costs $199. The RPG was developed by Japanese studio Quintet, and was originally released in 1995, exclusively in Japan. Terranigma came to Europe and Australia a year later, but failed to ever reach North America. That will change when it re-releases for modern consoles early next year.

Clear River Games is developing and publishing a revamped version of Terranigma for PlayStation 5, PS4, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The SNES RPG remains largely intact, with some modern enhancements and new quality-of-life features. Terranigma's new release date is January 14, 2027, and is going all-in on special editions.

Terranigma Gaia Edition Costs $199

The most notable of Terranigma's new releases is the Gaia Edition, which goes on sale September 25 through Limited Run Games. Going for $199.99, Terranigma Gaia Edition is available for PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox. Its standard game box comes with a foil treatment and reversible cover, featuring new artwork by Kamui Fujiwara, but the Gaia Edition also includes a SteelBook box, also with new art by Fujiwara.

Gaia Edition purchasers also get a Yomi figure, a mechanical music box featuring "Elle's Theme," a song from Terranigma's soundtrack, a full soundtrack CD, an artbook comprising more than 200 pages, a cloth world map, an enamel pin, and a game booklet. Everything comes in a special Gaia Edition box with a magnetic sleeve.

In addition to the Gaia Edition, Terranigma technically has three other physical versions available. Two are variants of the standard release—one the regular box, the other with a foil treatment. The latter is available only through Limited Run Games, but they bear the same prices: $39.99 on PS5 and Xbox; $44.99 on Switch 2. The SteelBook edition is also available separately at $64.99 on PS5, Xbox, and Switch 2.

Super Nintendo Classic Terranigma Returns January 14, 2027

Terranigma finally getting an official release in North America is notable in itself, but the classic RPG has also been preserved with only ancillary modern enhancements. The game will effectively be the exact same as it was in 1995, though there is "faster, smoother access to items and magic," according to its Steam description.

Some major quality-of-life improvements include a mini-map, save states and the ability to rewind, and the option to remap buttons. There are also new, optional, high-resolution backgrounds, a music player to listen to the soundtrack within the game, and a virtual museum to look at enemies and their design.

Terranigma sports real-time combat, and is especially notable for the character design work done by manga artist Kamui Fujiwara, who returned for the new Gaia Edition artwork noted above. It's nice to see a Super Nintendo classic like Terranigma preserved and find a wider audience with a new release, and it's fun having Clear River Games and Limited Run Games go all out on the $199 Gaia Edition.
