The Lord of the Rings Returns in 2027 With New RPG Available for Preorder

2027 marks a whole new era for The Lord of the Rings, as pre-orders have opened for the latest incarnation of its popular tabletop RPG game, which launches alongside tomes that further expand the realms of men, while statting out the nastiest monsters of Middle-earth.

Free League Publshing publishes two RPGs based on The Lord of the Rings. The first is The One Ring, which has its own unqiue rules system that attempts to emulate the feeling of Tolkien's world, while the second is The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying, which uses an adapted version of Dungeons & Dragons 5e mechanics, tailoring the familiar systems to Middle-earth. The company usually releases books that cater to both systems, with the same lore and flavor text, but different mechanical content.

The One Ring RPG Revised Core Rules Launches 2027

The next incarnation of The One Ring is on the way, as a new BackerKit campaign has launched for a series of books that are set to launch in October 2027. These include the Revised Core Rules for The One Ring, which overhauls the original book for the sake of clarity, streamlines the combat rules, and adds a brand-new form of gameplay, called Strider Mode, where one person can go solo.

The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying is also undergoing an update, with Strider Mode being added to that ruleset, as well as bringing the system in line with the 2024 iteration of Dungeons & Dragons. Those who own the digital versions of both books will receive the revised versions for free upon release.

The Monsters Of Middle-Earth Will Receive Stats In 2027

The BackerKit campaign also features new supplements for both RPG systems. The first is Creatures Strange and Foul for The One Ring and Of Orces and Evil Things for the 5e system. These are bestiaries that provide detailed information about the servants of the Shadow in Middle-earth, including orcs, goblins, dragons, and even the Balrog.

The second is The White Tower and the Hall of Gold for The One Ring and Realms of the South for 5e. These books detail the realms of men, with the lands of Gondor and the kingdom of Rohan detailed for use in the game, giving players new character creation options for those with the will to oppose Sauron.

The BackerKit is already fully funded, with a wide variety of special bundles that come with extra content, like cloth maps and art prints, so those who support the campaign shouldn't be concerned about the order not being fulfilled. The world of Middle-earth is ripe for adventure, and these books will offer groups some of the best ways to follow in the Fellowship's footsteps, as they seek glory and treasure of their own.
