According to Final Fantasy 10 producer Yoshinori Kitase, the development team was working on the game under the assumption that it could be their last single-player RPG.
That news comes from Game Informer, as published in the magazine’s latest issue. Kitase pointed out that the thinking back in the day was that “the future would be entirely online.” Some folks may remember that Final Fantasy 11, which was fully online, was announced before Final Fantasy 10 even launched.
“There was a general sense at the time that the future would be entirely online, as symbolized by the announcement of FFXI. For that reason, we were determined to deliver the best possible experience, working under the assumption that FFX could be our last single-player RPG.”
In the same interview, Kitase reflected on the impact of Final Fantasy 10 as a whole:
“Through FFX, the fundamental format of an RPG that evokes emotion through its characters and dramatic storytelling reached a certain level of maturity, and this has gone on to shape the evolution of the Final Fantasy series as we know it today.”
