Fate/EXTRA Record Preview – An Early 2027 RPG Standout

Fate is a series I can talk about for probably 24 hours straight. I’ve been through almost every corner of the franchise at this point, from the original visual novel to about every single anime released to date. Naturally, you can probably guess that I’ve been eagerly awaiting Fate/EXTRA Record. I had the chance to check out both a presentation and a hands-on demo at Tokyo Game Show 2026, and if you want my initial thoughts, it’s simple: this game is going to be incredible. I’m afraid all my January plans may be quickly upended once I get my hands on Fate/EXTRA Record at release.

During a presentation with Aniplex, we had the chance to see a walkthrough of two sections of the game, plus there was a Q&A session at the end. I previously shared many of the highlights, including the status of a Fate/Extra CCC rerelease, a new Fate game, and details of the development story of EXTRA Record. That presentation gave me a much better idea of what the team is aiming for with Fate/EXTRA Record, but trying the game myself on the show floor really sold me on it.

The big star of this remake is the brand new combat system. I know there were some questions surrounding these changes, but based on what I saw, I really do think the team has something great here. As soon as you get into the flow of battle, Fate/EXTRA Record becomes really hard to put down. I feel like it is going to be difficult to get bored with this game, and that is a good thing. The combat system really spices things up because you have to think about what you are doing and actually put your brain to it. From the get-go, this remake is built around a card system. Depending on which Servant you choose (Saber, Caster, or Archer), you will have a different set of cards to use in battle. These cards are built around your Servant’s abilities, and their playstyles are completely different.

Combat revolves around drawing different cards and having them at your disposal during each turn. The main thing you have to focus on is the AP meter, or Action Point meter, displayed in the bottom-left corner of the screen. This essentially tells you how many cards you can use during a turn, and every card has a different AP requirement. Obviously, things could be different in the full game, but for the purposes of the demo, some cards required zero AP, some required one, and others required two. That forces you to get strategic because you only have a set amount of AP each turn. In our case, we had three. You have to think about how many cards you can use and what you actually need to do. Should you guard? Attack? Use a skill? There is a lot of strategy involved, and I really appreciated that during the demo.

I also got the chance to play as all three Servants, and it really should not be understated how different their movesets and card decks are. Saber focuses on getting Rose cards that can help buff you, while Archer has a ton of low-cost and zero-cost AP cards that can help you deal a lot of damage and link together chain attacks. Caster uses curses and has plenty of fun attacks. This applies to every character, but if you link three attacks together in a row, you get an additional attack that deals extra damage for free. You can throw that at an enemy and potentially defeat them right there, which is really useful. It is also worth noting that the deck you begin with will grow over the course of the game. As you defeat Gatekeepers, they will drop and give you additional cards.

Moving on, though, I cannot help but gush about the visuals. Fate/EXTRA Record is gorgeous, and I am absolutely in love with the animated character sprites. They give so much personality to these characters through their reactions, and I adore how the team has been able to bring Arco Wada’s designs to life. The game’s presentation really lends itself to this. Even Aniplex, during our presentation, encouraged us to try the different dialogue options because you can see your Servants react in unique ways depending on what you choose. The presentation is just top-notch.

I love the animated sprites, and there are even some visual novel-style segments where the protagonist goes through an internal monologue that you can click through. On top of that, there are fully 3D cutscenes, and those were great to watch. The ones I saw during the demo were really, really good. Naturally, none of that works without the audio, and the voice acting is so good. The performances really stood out to me, and the music is also great to listen to. It matches the tone and themes of the game really well. I also love the areas we have seen so far and how the team is recreating them. I am very excited to see the rest of the game, but overall, the presentation is such a high point here.

Fate/EXTRA Record really is shaping up to be a great remake. I am personally so excited for January, from the new combat system to smaller additions like Servant Time, where you can spend time with your Servant and simply talk with them. Between my 90-minute presentation and roughly 30 minutes with the demo, I really do believe this game is shaping up to be something special. Truly, I would be shocked if it is not one of my favorite games of 2027.
